On Harlem Hospital Losing its Plastic Surgery Program

The Harlem Hospital Center, which will lose its orthopedic residency program June 30, is scheduled to lose another surgical residency program, in plastic surgery, a year from now.


City hospital officials said the loss of accreditation of the orthopedic program jeopardized the municipal hospital’s designation as one of New York City’s 10 hospital trauma centers.


They said yesterday that the loss of the plastic surgery program – which, like all programs at Harlem Hospital, is provided by Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons under a contract with the city – would undermine the largest plastic surgery service in the city that deals almost exclusively with poor, black patients.
