Dr. Ferdinand Ofodile, Clinical Professor Emeritus and Special Lecturer in Surgery at Columbia University, is a trailblazer in his own right. A protégé of Dr. Arthur L. Garnes, the first recognized African American plastic surgeon in the US, Dr. Ofodile has dedicated his career to upholding Dr. Garnes’ legacy of mentorship and opportunity.

As former Chief of Plastic Surgery, Program Director, Associate Director of Surgery, and Site Director at Harlem Hospital, Dr. Ofodile has been instrumental in shaping the nation’s first plastic and reconstructive surgery training program at a predominantly Black hospital. His unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion makes him the perfect namesake for this important lecture.
